Israel has used white phosphorus in its continuing military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, putting civilians at serious threat, Human Rights Watch has said, following an analysis of videotape of the conflict.
Human Rights Watch said it vindicated footage taken in Lebanon and Gaza on Tuesday and Wednesday, independently, showing multiple uses of ordnance- fired white phosphorus over the Gaza City harborage and two pastoral locales along the Israel- Lebanon border.
Human Rights Watch also canvassed two people who described an attack in Gaza, the rights group said.
HRW said the use of white phosphorus in densely peopled areas violates Israel’s obligation under transnational law to take all doable preventives to avoid detriment to civilians.
“ Any time that white phosphorus is used in crowded mercenary areas, it poses a high threat of excruciating becks
and lifelong suffering, ” Lama Fakih, HRW’s director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement on Wednesday.
“ White phosphorus is unlawfully magpie when outburst in populated civic areas, where it can burn down houses and beget obvious detriment to civilians. ” Israel should ban all use of “ outburst ” white phosphorus munitions in populated areas without exception, the rights group said, noting the vacuity ofnon-lethalalternatives.White phosphorus, which can beget bone-deep becks

While the use of the substance in warzones isn't banned outright under transnational law, use near civilians is banned under the United Nations Convention on Conventional Munitions, to which Israel isn't asignatory.Israel’s defence ministry didn't incontinently respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.
But Israel’s service was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying it was “ presently not apprehensive of the use of munitions containing white phosphorus in Gaza ”.
